‘We tell ourselves stories in order to live’

Joan Didion

ACROSS THE WAY our Community Storytelling Project is up and running again!

We began the project in 2021 aiming to capture the spirit, humour and resilience of the Whitehawk community through the stories of their real lives and passions which are so often misrepresented. Covid intervened

But during November and December 2023 we have been back talking and listening to Whitehawk residents at Manor Gym, Walter May House and Bristol Estate and collecting stories about their passions. Over 30 people have generously shared some of their stories with us including their love for and knowledge of cold water swimming, ballroom dancing, running, sound systems, goalkeeping, standing up to racism, travel, crochet and knitting.

Funny, emotional and revealing.

Real stories from real people.

Alongside the stories, award winning photojournalist John Cole has been mentoring and training a young person from Whitehawk to take a range of photographs inspired by some of the stories.

Our partner, Wellsbourne,  is a GP surgery with a difference. Alongside the clinical services you would expect, they work with the local East Brighton community to make sure everyone can live, work, learn and play happily and healthily. They are supporting ACROSS THE WAY and helping to monitor its impact.

Does storytelling make a difference to wellbeing?

The project culminated on 25 January 2024 at BELTA Community Hub where we transformed the community room to host a one off special evening where food and stories were shared.
